Dr. Daniel F. Upchurch, Ph.D., MSCP
Director for the Office of Regent-GSSR
The Director leads the Office of Global Social Service Research, guiding its mission to mobilize universities, NGOs, faith-based groups, and community institutions toward meaningful collaboration and social impact.
Improving Global Well-Being
The vision of Regent-GSSR is to improve the well-being of the world's most vulnerable individuals, families, and communities. The office seeks to promote meaningful collaboration and social impact through research, education, and service.
An Interdisciplinary Centre
Regent-GSSR mobilizes universities, non-governmental organizations, faith-based groups, and community institutions to work collaboratively on issues of global and community welfare.
Where We Focus
Regent-GSSR organizes its work across research, learning, and faculty engagement.

Research and Partnerships
The primary goal of Regent-GSSR research and partnerships is to establish, strengthen, and track collaborations with local, state, national, and international partners. These partnerships are designed to promote:
- Student engagement
- Continuing education
- Community service
- Collaborative and community-based participatory research
Through these initiatives, Regent-GSSR develops and implements strategies that contribute to improved global and community welfare.

Service Learning
The service-learning component of Regent-GSSR enhances student learning through structured, community-based service, learning projects. Program objectives are grounded in student scholarship, education, and experiential learning.
Students apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges, gaining discipline-specific competencies through hands-on opportunities. Participation in service learning enables students to achieve meaningful academic and professional learning outcomes while contributing positively to communities.

Teacher-Scholar Model
Regent-GSSR actively promotes and supports the teacher-scholar model, which benefits both faculty and students. Teacher-scholars engage students in connecting academic inquiry with real-world issues through active scholarship.
This model fosters the integration of teaching, research, and service, encouraging students to connect the life of the mind with the world in which they live. The Regent-GSSR teacher-scholar approach reflects recognized best practices in higher education and supports a culture of engaged learning and discovery.
